Beginning today, the Joint Base Lewis-McChord visitor center at the main gate — also known as the Liberty Gate — will close until Sept. 30 for construction.

The Lewis main gate is located off Interstate 5 at exit 120, which is the primary gate visitors use to access the base. A temporary visitor center has opened along DuPont-Steilacoom Road off exit 119, and visitors also can get passes at the McChord Field main gate off exit 125 and then take the Unity Bridge to Lewis Main.

Those departing Lewis Main will need to leave the base using an alternate gate during the construction.

The four-month construction project at Main Gate will repair “failing pavement, improve lane alignment, improve the visitor center parking area, and improve the appearance of both the access control point.” The completion schedule for the historic Camp Lewis Gate is still on track for Sept. 30.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has posted electronic messages regarding gate construction on reader boards to keep drivers informed.
