Thurston County Board of Commissioners has appointed Maria Aponte to serve as the Human Resources Department Director.

Aponte has worked for Thurston County in the Human Resources Department since June 2006 serving as an HR analyst, senior HR analyst, HR manager, and then entered in her role as the interim director in December 2018. Prior to her employment with Thurston County, Aponte served as the senior board assistant for the Washington State Personnel Appeals Board.

Aponte assumed her new role as director on April 22, and reports directly to the County Manager.

“Ms. Aponte’s strong leadership skills and broad knowledge of human resources laws, labor relations, the bargaining units, and development of personnel policies will be a valuable asset to the county and the county’s leadership team,” said County Manager, Ramiro Chavez, in a prepared statement. “We are confident she will lead the department very effectively and move the county forward with innovative and cutting edge ideas.”

Aponte received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Washington, Tacoma and her Master of Business Administration from Saint Martin’s University. She has also received training from the National Public Employer Labor Relations Association and participated in the Labor Relations Institute through the Association of Washington Cities.
