Each year as Tacoma Community College (TCC) celebrates another class of graduates, it also remembers those who have gone on from its institution to impact their community. This year’s 2019 TCC Distinguished Alumnus is Dr. Mari Leavitt, whose passion for higher education and community have continued to inspire others.
Dr. Leavitt graduated from Lincoln High School before going on to TCC to earn her Associate of Applied Science degree. While at TCC, Leavitt was an active member of the school community through her role as President of the student government.
As President, she helped gather funds for the Opgaard Student Center, organized to have legislators tour campus and speak with students, and encouraged students to vote and volunteer. For all her work with students and to TCC, she was honored as an the Ellen Pinto Outstanding Student of the Year.
After her time at TCC, Dr. Leavitt went on to receive her bachelor and master degrees from Western Washington University. Deciding to push herself even further, she attended Oregon State University to get her Ph.D. in Community College Leadership. As she’s continued her career, Leavitt has remained a supporter of community college through working at TCC and Pierce Community College. Currently, Leavitt works as the State Representative for the 28th District.
Dr. Leavitt will be honored on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the 10 a.m. TCC commencement ceremony.
