Each year, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber honors a local veteran with the John H. Anderson Military Citizen of the Year Award.

The chamber’s Military Affairs Committee recently announced that this year, the 40th annual award goes to Specialist Zion Comesario.

Comesario is the volunteer Battalion BOSS Representative for the 51st Expeditionary Signal Battalion. BOSS, or Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers, is a program that helps members to contribute to their communities and to participate in recreation and leisure activities.

According to a statement, Comesario “emphasizes the importance of ohana (family) and his work, giving the opportunity to learn, grow, and adapt so that he can pass those traits on to the next generation.”

The chamber presented Comesario with the award at a ceremony on Nov. 1 at the Tacoma Yacht Club.

Anderson, the award’s namesake, is a military veteran, a former Tacoma mayor, an accomplished civic leader, a successful business owner, and a former chair of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber Board of Directors.
