Downtown Tacoma residents, workers, and visitors now have a new choice when it comes to fresh, healthy, grab-and-go food.
On Tuesday, Abbie Cates, owner of Gig Harbor-based Flip Food Company, celebrated the grand opening of Flip Fresh, a small-scale specialty food store, on Antique Row.
“This is a dream come true,” Cates told a crowd of several dozen people who gathered at the store, located at 728 Broadway, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “This is really a way to offer downtown Tacoma healthy, prepared food that is all made by local producers. They are phenomenal. Everything that I have here, I have eaten a lot of, and I love it. I’m just super jazzed to help Tacoma grow, and to be a part of its growth because it’s so dynamic.”
In early 2017, Cates started Knife Fork Spoon, which was recently rebranded to Flip Food Company. Today, the company includes Flip Frozen, a line of healthy frozen foods, and Flip Fresh, the downtown Tacoma store.
“The store will focus on three things: community, being a food incubator space, and bringing fun into people’s lives,” Cates told South Sound and South Sound Business in August. “Our store is designed to be easily navigated — no long, mind-numbing aisles here — and is full of items to nourish your body and soul.”
During the grand opening celebration, visitors browsed the 1,500-square-foot store’s shelves and sampled a range of specialty food items, such as wine produced by Marrowstone Vineyards on the Kitsap Peninsula, Pico De Gallo produced by Pardo’s in Tacoma, and kombucha produced by Kombucha Yum in Lakewood.
According to Cates, Flip Fresh offers more than 350 products individually sourced from more than three-dozen vendors. The store is open Monday through Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. More information is available online here.
