The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award recognizes and encourages community service activities by groups and individuals in Pierce County. The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.

This year, there are two categories for the award: Lifetime Service (individual or group) and Emerging Leader (individual). Nominees must be residents of Pierce County, give skills generously, and show a serious commitment to community service over time.

“We are looking for people who embrace and share the legacy of Dr. King’s teachings and actions,” Brendan Nelson, a member of the City Events and Recognition Committee, said. “I’m excited to see the Emerging Leader category added this year because I know so many young people who are making a difference out there and should be recognized and encouraged to lead on.”

Winners of the award will be honored at a televised celebration on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

Nominations can be submitted by email (, by fax (253-591-5232), or by mail (City of Tacoma, Attention: City Events and Recognitions Committee, 2727 E. D St., Tacoma WA 98421). Questions can be directed to Kala Dralla at or (253) 573-2523.
