When Pierce County entered phase two of Gov. Jay Inslee’s phased reopening plan, a coalition of businesses, nonprofits, the City of Sumner, the Sumner Downtown Promotion Association, and the Puyallup-Sumner Chamber of Commerce launched a three-step promotional campaign.

The first step introduced “Open in Sumner.” It was designed to help customers find ways to support Sumner businesses virtually before they could physically open. Businesses within Sumner were asked to use the graphic and the hashtag #OpeninSumner to encourage potential customers to browse other ways to support local businesses.

Now, the second step is underway. It’s a social media boost grant program that funds individual businesses who use paid social media ads to reach customers. Local Sumner businesses can register for this program with the City using this grant registration form. Each business creates its own ad and must include either the Open in Sumner logo or use the overlay, both available online.

For some smaller businesses who may not be familiar with social media marketing, the City will be holding weekly webinars with tips on how to use social media for business.

Step three will involve developing plans for resiliency and taking lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic for application in future potential stay home orders, other economic downturns, snow situations, and more.
