Medstar Transportation Company, reliable local transit service provider to the PNW since 1984, offers free medical grade service in sanitized vehicles to health care workers and COVID-19 patients in the Tacoma area.

The family-owned company, based in the Yakima valley, has provided the service since March in order to help slow the spread of the virus. Medstar’s professionally trained drivers, equipped with safety kits and supplies, enabled the company to offer services immediately, as an essential ride provider. “We realized early on that rideshares and taxis may not be equipped to provide sanitized rides,” said Justin Bergener, Medstar Transportation CEO.

The rides, not only for doctors and nurses, are for the many individuals working on the front lines of the health care industry. According to Bergener, “We can provide a valuable service to those making an impact within our communities.” With essential workers taking on additional shifts, he added, “We wanted them to know they can get to and from work safely and reliably.”

Although every trip is treated as a COVID positive trip, Medstar’s on-demand business also has dedicated drivers and vehicles that offer COVID-19 positive rides. Vehicles for these rides have been outfitted with barriers and use drivers who have tested negative to the virus. Working with Hopelink and other Medicaid brokers, Medstar has provided transport to testing and isolation locations, as well as medical care facilities.

Recently, the company was involved in another type of project involving potatoes. Farmers south of Spokane, in Ritzville, had an overabundance of potatoes up for donation, but needed help in delivering them. Medstar offered to pick them up and transport them to food banks throughout the Yakima, Tri-Cities, and Seattle areas.

With 130 drivers and three office locations, including in Yakima, Everett, and Tacoma, Bergener said, “I tell my drivers all the time that they are also health care heroes.”

Health care workers and COVID-19 patients can efficiently reserve rides with Medstar Transportation by calling 1(800) 236-2011 or by downloading the GOIN smartphone app.
