The Economic Development Board (EDB) for Tacoma-Pierce County has published its list of top Pierce County employers for 2018. The report, which asks companies to note the number of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) positions (not an employee headcount), is compiled annually through in-person, phone, e-mail, and online surveys.

Here are some highlights from this year’s survey.

Points of Interest

  • The list includes 259 major employers, each of which has 100 or more Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs). The employers included on this year’s list represent 163,205 jobs;
  • Health care service providers continue to be Pierce County’s largest private employers. More than 21,900 FTEs are employed in the local health care and senior services industries, representing roughly 13% of FTEs reported by companies participating in the 2018 survey;
  • Joint Base Lewis–McChord in Pierce County is Washington state’s second-largest employer and contributes $9.2 billion to the local economy annually;
  • Amazon’s two distribution centers employ 1,200 FTEs, making the company the largest distribution employer in Pierce County;
  • More than 8,100 jobs are related to transportation, trade, and logistics;
  • Boeing’s Frederickson plant is Pierce County’s largest aerospace manufacturing facility.
