For the past 38 years, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce has given the Howard O. Scott Award to a citizen-soldier or airman for their outstanding civic contributions. This year, the award went to Puyallup native and Washington Air National Guardsman Capt. Hans Zeiger.

In addition to serving in the guard, Zeiger is a member of the state Senate and serves as assistant scoutmaster to Troop 174, helping to train up future Eagle Scouts. He also assists in different nonprofit veteran’s organizations in Puyallup.

In 2011, Zeiger was elected as a representative to the 25th district. He served in the Washington state House of Representatives for three terms until he was elected to the Washington State Senate in 2016. In 2013, Zeiger became a public affairs officer for the Washington Air National Guard.

When Zeiger accepted the award he made sure to credit both of his grandfathers who served in the military and community. His grandfather Ed Zeiger was noted as teaching him about the importance of civic engagement and serving one’s community. Zeiger credited his maternal grandfather, Mark, who served as a pilot in the Air Force, for inspiring his desire to serve in the military.

Brig. Gen. Jeremy Horn, director of Joint Forces, Washington Air National Guard, said in his keynote speech, “I don’t think you could pick a more fitting recipient, he is highly successful in his civilian and military career while having a supportive family at home. Hans and his wife Erin represent the best of us.”
