The City of Gig Harbor recently won a Project of the Year Award from the Washington state chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for its Welcome Plaza and Lift Station in Skansie Brothers Park.
The project, located in downtown Gig Harbor at 3211 Harborview Drive, is a completely redesigned, state-of-the-art wastewater pump station that doubles as a plaza for residents and guests. Included on the site are enhanced restrooms and other facilities, a large outdoor entertainment space, seating areas, and a wheel chair lift.
“The project is in the heart of town,” said Gig Harbor Mayor Kit Kuhn. “It is a beautiful gathering place with a unique function. We are fortunate to have been able to develop this lift station without having to relocate it.”
Construction on the lift station and plaza began in September 2016. The project was completed by Memorial Day 2017.
Other 2018 APWA Project of the Year winners include Thurston County Public Works, for the Beaver Creek Road Bridge, and the City of SeaTac, for the Connecting 28th/24th Avenue South project.
