Today, a number of Pierce County companies will join in bettering our community as part of United Way’s Day of Caring, including a team of nearly 100 University of Washington Tacoma students.

UW Tacoma has rallied to volunteer at five different organizations, such as Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter and Salvation Army.

This year’s annual volunteer event features 55 projects and 40 teams, nearly 1,000 volunteers spending their day assisting nonprofit organizations. Projects include harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables for local food banks, hosting a carnival for adults with disabilities, weeding rain gardens, preparing and serving food to those in need and designing a mural for a local garden.

The estimated value of the hours that will be donated is nearly $126,000 dollars.
