City of Federal Way is the only Western Washington jurisdiction to earn a grant from U.S. Department of Justice to fund community policing efforts for the coming three years.

A $625,000 award from DOJ’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) will pay for five additional full-time law enforcement officers in Federal Way as part of a $98.5 million national program that will create 802 new police beat positions.

This year, there were bonus points in the evaluation of applicant agencies for those jurisdictions that agreed to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in their detention facilities. Today’s announcement said that 80 percent of grant recipients did make such a pledge, but no details on any individual request was made.
