Businesses and residents of Kent and three other Puget Sound cities may not be facing a strike by their refuse collectors that appeared possible as this week dawned.

Teamsters Local 117 has announced a tentative labor agreement with Republic Services that will be fully recommended to 120 union recycle and yard waste drivers. They have continued working since their previous contract expired at the end of May, even after authorizing a strike in a vote last Sunday.

“We will be bringing our members together soon to discuss this contract proposal and to bring the offer to a vote,” said John Scearcy, Secretary-Treasurer and the lead negotiator for Teamsters Local 117.

According to early statements from the union, contract negotiations had been going on for many months, prior to this newly announced agreement. No details on the tentative wage and benefits pact have been released.
