The magazine Washington Monthly places Tacoma Community College among the top 50 community colleges in the nation and the top five in the state.

It’s ranked 46th in the nation and fourth in the state of Washington, according to the publication, which uses less traditional college-ranking criteria.

“Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend,” the college ranking issue’s introduction reads.

Grays Harbor College, Cascadia Community College, Green River Community College and Highline Community College in Washington also made the list.

Earlier this year, Tacoma Community College earned recognition as one of the nation’s top 100 certificate producers for 2013.
