Tacoma’s Downtown on the Go has announced that it will honor Zipcar for its work in promoting sustainable modes of transportation through its car sharing program in the city.
Boston-based Zipcar, which has provided downtown Tacoma with its carsharing service for just over a year, will be presented with the Transportation Innovator Award for its “Big Step/Bold Program” at tomorrow’s Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber luncheon. Carla Archambault, general manager for Zipcar in the greater Seattle area, will be on hand to accept the award.
Downtown on the Go annually presents the Transportation Innovator Award to recognize the work of people and companies to help the organization achieve its goal of reducing the number of single occupancy vehicles in the city by 11 percent by 2015.
“Zipcar is such an important part of the equation,” said Kristina Walker, manager of Downtown on the Go. “When we talk about getting people out of their cars to go downtown, the first thing they always say is, ‘Well, I have errands to run during the day,’ or, ‘I have meetings during the day.’ Zipcar solves that problem. It allows people to leave their car at home to free up a parking spot for maybe a client at a business somewhere in the downtown core. It’s such an important tool for solving that challenge.”
In addition, six other downtown businesses and two individuals will be awarded for their exemplary work in sustainable transportation and commute options.
