In a 7-2 vote on Tuesday, the Tacoma City Council signaled that it is ready to talk about annexing Point Ruston so that the development can move forward.
“We have to protect our investment of 30 million dollars, we have to do our best to make sure this project goes forward and this might be the best way to do it,” said Mayor Marilyn Strickland.
However, for annexation talks to begin, the Ruston City Council also has to agree to move forward. Elected officials from Ruston had testified at Tacoma City Council earlier this month voicing their opposition against annexation.
Point Ruston developers contend that the city of Ruston has made the permitting process more difficult. Ruston Mayor Bruce Hopkins said developers have moved forward on construction without acquiring the necessary permits.
Councilman David Boe and Councilwoman voted against annexing Point Ruston.
