Rand Hill, chief financial officer of Dillanos Coffee Roasters in Sumner, began his career 45 years ago – “it seems like just yesterday”  – and the “feeling” side of his personality has always been a part of his fiscal management style. That stands out in this finalist in the 2017 Financial Executive of the Year recognition program.

Working in 10 different companies from a small ($1 million) firm to a worldwide billion dollar giant, on Wall Street to downtown Tokyo and near Main Street in Sumner, Hill says it’s important that you feel the right “fit” with your employer. “If you’re trying too hard to fit into the company, it probably is not the right company.”

The nomination quotes Dillanos’ co-CEO Chris Heyer in calling his CFO “exceptional at taking a challenge, financial or otherwise, and breaking it down to its simple core. Then providing several options for a solution.” Over the past 11 years, Hill has advised the executive team at Dillanos while it grew beyond $17 million sales annually as it marked its 25th anniversary.

“People think that finance is wrapped in policies and procedures, but the real challenge is problem solving solutions and creating efficiencies,” Hill believes. And it doesn’t have to be boring – in fact, his area of the company is known as the “Fun-ance” Department.

You can meet Rand Hill and the other 13 finalists for South Sound Financial Executives of the Year on Wednesday, April 26, for a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Historic 1625 Tacoma Place. Tickets are available here.
