A state Board agreed today with plans from Department of Natural Resources to purchase two adjoining 40-acre parcels of working forest in Pacific County.

DNR will buy the land, located four miles west of the town of Pe Ell, from willing private sellers for $325,000 and add this prime timberland to the Common School Trust, which helps generate long-term, sustainable revenue for public schools statewide.

In other action taken today, a formerly unnamed creek north of Rochester in Thurston County, was name Shaner Creek to honor Melvin Shaner. He operated a business nearby and led local efforts to clean up the waterway.
