Fearing the potential impacts of a state government shut-down very personally, members of several labor unions representing agency employees have scheduled demonstrations tomorrow throughout the South Sound.
“Day of Action to Prevent a State Government Shutdown” is the banner that will be hoisted in Federal Way from 11 a.m. to noon at Celebration Park. Another gathering outside of Western State Hospital in Lakewood will run 12 noon to 1 p.m. and beginning at 2 p.m. at Puyallup City Hall, state workers will be stating their case.
The All In For Action coalition organizing effort includes Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO; Washington Federation of State Employees AFSCME and several other unions.
They will be arguing that the lay-off of 32,000 workers, as well as possible budgetary actions to preclude negotiated pay raises for state workers, possible closures of state parks and diminished supervision of 18,000 released criminal offenders are too dire to allow lawmakers not to finish a budget by June 30th.
