The annual list of Super Lawyers and Rising Stars is out today from a legal-focused magazine. And it includes 127 private practice attorneys in Tacoma, three in Gig Harbor, one in Puyallup, in a wide variety of practice areas.
You can search the list by name, location, practice area and law school at this link.
Super Lawyers Magazine says it provides this rating service for attorneys who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process (explained here) is said to be multi-phased, including independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations.
Since there are no lawyers from Thurston, Mason or Lewis Counties honored, it is assumed that the competition was restricted to the most populous communities in the Puget Sound region. That question has been presented to the editor of Super Lawyers and will be added to this blog item, when received.
UPDATE: Jill Steward, a research editor at Super Lawyers magazine, responded with a further explanation of the program's selection process, though without a specific answer to the geographic question.
“We receive formal nominations from attorneys licensed and practicing in a specific market; this process helps build our candidate pool,” Steward said. “Since the majority of nominations are done by attorneys, it may be a reflection of where attorneys are located in Washington.
“Lawyers may not self-nominate or pay us to list them on the Super Lawyers list. We also accept informal nominations from (attorney's) clients, readers and attorneys out of state,” she added.
So, it appears that more lawyers in Greater Olympia need to be nominated, if we are to grow the local ranks of South Sound Super Lawyers and Rising Stars. — JR
