While it will still be located in Kent on South 288th Street and have a post office box address in Sumner for a few more years, the headquarters for REI – a national outdoor clothing and accessories membership-owned company today announced it will be moving to Bellevue in search of more space.

Various regional news media outlets are reporting a non-binding letter of intent with a developer offering eight acres of land in the Spring District, east of downtown Bellevue with move-in set for 2020. The news was confirmed by REI.

“We are confident in the process, but we do not have a formal deal,” the company said in a statement. “The non-binding letter of intent allows both parties to pull out at any time, with no penalties. By the end of the summer, we will know either that we’re moving forward or that our search continues.”

REI brought its administrative headquarters to Kent in 1988, but recently has said its current building could not hold all of its expanding staff.

“With our new campus, we’re looking to create a hub for employees to come together to dream and scheme about life outdoors,” REI said in its statement. The firm plans to “embed the outdoors into our campus” in Bellevue, with ample green space and, perhaps, open-air meeting spaces.

The new location is on the site of the former Safeway distribution center in the Bel-Red Corridor.
