Forbes has released its 2017 list of America’s Best Employers, with one South Sound company making the list: Kent’s REI.

It’s the first year that REI has made the best employers list, and what an entrance it was: the outdoor retail co-op came in at third on the finance magazine’s Large Employers list, behind fellow Puget Sound-based company Costco and Internet titan Google.

Forbes lauded REI for increasing pay for hourly retail workers over the last year, as well as giving them “more clarity and predictability in their schedules.”

REI joined 10 other Washington companies on Forbes’ list of 500 top companies. Ten of the 11 companies, including REI, are based in King County, with the lone outlier in Snohomish County.

To compile the list, Forbes surveyed 30,000 American employees working for large (more than 5,000 employees in the U.S.) and midsize (between 1,000 and 5,000 employees in the U.S.) employers in 25 different industries. The willingness to recommend one’s own employer was considered to be the most important factor in evaluating companies, with a secondary dimension involving asking employees to share thoughts on good or bad employers in industries besides their own.

It's not the first time this year REI has earned a top employer recognition; Fortune also named it one of the 100 best companies to work for in March, the co-op’s 20th consecutive such honor.
