According to the latest reports from the Washington State Employment Security Department, Pierce County's unemployment rate dropped to 7.7 percent last month.
The ESD's preliminary August data puts the number of employed civilians in Pierce County at 351,800, with 29,160 unemployed.
August marks the second straight month that the jobless rate has dropped, down from 8.2 percent in July and 8.4 percent in June. August 2013's unemployment rate is also down from the 9.1 percent rate in the same month last year.
Among industry sectors, construction provided the biggest boost, with 900 jobs added from July to August this year. The government sector showed the biggest drop, losing 1,900 jobs during the same period.
The county's jobless rate is still above both the state's rate — 7 percent seasonally adjusted last month — and the country's, which was at 7.3 percent in August.
