As it worked late Friday night, Washington’s state Senate confirmed the gubernatorial nomination of Jay Balasbas to join the State Utilities and Transportation Commission.

He has been serving as senior budget assistant to the governor in the Office of Financial Management since 2012, and earlier worked for the state House of Representatives and WSDOT.

Balasbas’ first day at the commission will be May 1. His term runs until January 1, 2023.

WUTC regulates the rates and services of investor-owned electric and natural gas utilities, landline telephone companies, solid waste haulers, private water systems and residential movers.
