Today Sound Transit kicks off a new campaign to promote light rail along points hosting summer activities.

In the new effort, Sound Transit is aiming to encourage commuters and tourists to use light rail to explore neighborhoods, farmers markets and festivals throughout the region. To make the options more visible, the agency has redecorated its train, and is posting information at stations about area happenings. A new web page, and informational booths at local events, are also part of the plan to spark more “shop and explore local” action.

With more than 400,000 people living within three miles of a Link light rail station, according to Sound Transit, communities are hoping this will improve business there as well. The agency is also promoting light rail as a means to avoid rising gas prices, city parking fees and summer traffic.
