MultiCare Health System will say goodbye to president and CEO Diane Cecchettini, RN, due to her just-announced plans for retirement.

Cecchettini has announced plans to leave her post in the second quarter of 2014. The health system, with five hospitals and numerous clinics around the South Sound – as well as roughly 10,600 workers and a 2,000-member medical staff – is the largest private employer for Pierce County, as well as the largest not-for-profit health system in the South Sound region.

Formerly an employee of UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Sacramento’s Sutter Health System, Cecchettini joined the Tacoma-based organization in 1989 as vice president of patient services. In 1999, she became president and CEO, the first woman and the first nurse to hold the position at MultiCare.

Prior to all of that, Cecchettini spent 21 years in the Air Force Reserve as a flight nurse in aeromedical evacuation. She served in the Vietnam era and was a troop commander in Desert Storm, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1993.

She has served two terms as chair of the governing board of the Washington State Hospital Association, as well as serving on many community boards in Tacoma and Pierce County.

In announcing her retirement plans, MultiCare board of directors chairman
John Folsom said that Cecchettini “has provided superb leadership to
MultiCare during her nearly 25 years with our organization. We have been
fortunate to have such a well-respected and capable leader at the helm.”

MultiCare’s board has assembled a search committee to begin the process
of recruiting the company’s next CEO.
