MultiCare Health System has announced that David O’Brien will be the new senior vice president and chief executive of the company’s East Region.

In this new role, O’Brien will preside over the Tacoma-based health conglomerate’s Eastern Washington footprint, including the integration of Rockwood Health Systems under the MultiCare umbrella. MultiCare acquired Spokane-based Rockwood, which includes Deaconess Hospital, Valley Hospital and Rockwood Clinic, in November; a MultiCare statement confirms the transaction is expected to close this summer.

“We’re pleased to have found a leader who understands the importance of collaborating with patients, families, employees and the community as we build a healthy future together. Dr. O’Brien’s dedication to patients and his leadership will guide this transition and MultiCare’s investment in the region,” said William G. “Bill” Robertson, President and CEO of MultiCare Health System. “Eastern Washington is a vibrant, growing region and we look forward to partnering with residents and local organizations to improve the health of the community.”

O’Brien currently serves as President of Providence St. Joseph Health – Humboldt, a two-hospital and medical group integrated system in Northern California. He will be based in Spokane upon joining MultiCare on June 19.

“I’m a health care executive now but I’m a physician at heart,” he said. “It really energizes me to pull together a group of people who work well together with the patient at the center.”
