The Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County has published this year’s major employers list, revealing the companies in the county with the most workers.

This year’s list identifies 244 major employers, each of which has 100 or more full-time equivalent employees. The companies included on this year’s list represent 165,741 jobs.

Predictably, health care firms are Pierce County’s largest private employers, with the two Tacoma-based health systems — MultiCare Health System (7,439 FTEs) and CHI Franciscan (6,528) topping the list. Another two health care providers, DaVita (sixth, with 1,025) and Kaiser Permanente (eighth; 755), make appearances in the top 10.

The rest of the top 10: State Farm (third; 2,150); Boeing (fourth; 1,575) Amazon (fifth; 1,400); Milgard (seventh; 1,000); Columbia Bank (ninth; 620); and Aacres (10th; 600).

Joint Base Lewis McChord, on the other hand, remains by far the county’s largest public employer, as well as its largest employer on the whole, with 60,100 FTEs. That’s up from 57,120 last year.

Manufacturing firms in Pierce County held steady, with Boeing’s Frederickson plant leading the way with 1,575 employees, slightly down from its 2016 county of 1,750. Distribution is continuing its boom, with Amazon’s pair of distribution enters making it Pierce’s largest employer in the sector. In retail, Safeway leads the pack with an estimated 1,848 FTEs.

Following last year’s growth trend, Pierce County’s major employers added thousands of FTEs to their payrolls. Notable newcomers to the 2017 list are Digestive Health Specialists (296); Yusen Logistics (130); and New Sound Transportation (100).
