Kent's Allegro Performing Arts Academy is moving closer to the heart of the city.
Allegro, currently located at 1209 Central Ave. S, is set for a Jan. 26 grand opening and open house at its new location at 222 Central Ave., the site of a former grocery store. The performance school currently offers lessons in tap, jazz, tumbling, drama, lyrical dance and musical theatre.
“We're just in the last three weeks of craziness and construction,” laughed owner and operator Tonya Goodwillie as she accepted the Kent Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Month award at today's Chamber luncheon. “It's going to be a beautiful facility, and I am so excited to be closer to downtown.
“That's one of the awesome things that I'm excited about most,” said Goodwillie, who grew up in Kent. “People in this area know where it is almost immediately. You could say that location, and people go, 'Yep, I got it.'”
The new building will be a two-year lease-to-own situation for Goodwillie, who said that renovations and upgrades to the site are ongoing.
“Dance studios, we need square footage, so that's a lot of [rent] money down the drain every month,” she said. “The lease-to-own [arrangement] was big. We're in the final stages now, and every day, things are changing visually. If you can imagine a square cement building and start from scratch — we're putting in all new HVAC, all new electrical, the walls, everything. We've been going since October. It's been a long process.”
