Unemployment rates were higher in most of the South Sound last month compared to a year ago, according to the latest numbers from the state Employment Security Department.

Mason County recorded the only year-to-year drop in unemployment, falling from 10.9 percent during August 2010 to 10.5 percent last month. Unemployment in Lewis County rose from 12.8 percent to 13.1 percent. The jobless figure ticked up in Pierce County from 9.8 to 9.9 percent and Thurston County saw an increase from 8 percent to 8.3 percent.
