Starting this week, more than 10,000 civilian employees at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will be taking unpaid “Friday furloughs,” according to an updated JBLM operations plan.

More than 10,000 civilian employees will take one unpaid day off each week for 11 weeks from today through the end of September. The furloughs were mandated by the Pentagon due to federal spending reductions.

Closures on Fridays will include, among other services, the initial military check-in point at Waller Hall, the Army's main helicopter airfield, off-base housing services, military-run academic courses at the Hawk, McChord and Stone education centers, and numerous Morale, Welfare and Readiness programs. In addition, Lewis-McChord commissary workers are being furloughed on Mondays.
