Jan Brazzell, who has run Advancement Consulting for 12 years, is a lady with a clear — if multifaceted — vision.

“I describe myself as a businesswoman, consultant, facilitator, educator and coach,” she said. “My mission is to help leaders move their organizations and businesses forward by planning, governing, managing and fundraising more effectively.”

It's a passion as well as a career for Brazzell, who added that her greatest joy comes from helping friends, family members and clients reach their greatest potential “as a result of our learning and solving problems together.”

Brazzell added that, as a child, she thought someday that she would teach. Even after leaving the world of academia — prior to moving to Washington, she was a tenure track professor at LSU — she still says that, in many ways, she very much remains a teacher.

“Many of my clients have extremely challenging and demanding jobs,” she said. “It feels great when I can lift some of the burden from their backs.”

Particularly near and dear to her heart are her not-for-profit clients, which she said range from arts to zoos. She often also gives to such programs financially, as she says she harbors “a special passion for organizations that aim to break the cycle of poverty.”

She also supports several other groups with her time and contributions, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Rotary of Tacoma #8, Tacoma Arts Commission and American Leadership Forum Tacoma/Pierce County. And while she's far removed from her Gulf Coast roots, she professed a deep love for her adopted hometown of Tacoma.

We could go on, but Brazzell is a self-described open book; from her dedication to her work to her love of classic rock and Angry Birds, you can learn more about her — and Business Examiner Media Group's other 2013 Women of Influence honorees — at next week's event, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the McGavick Conference Center at Clover Park Technical College.
