The largest independently owned craft distillery in Washington is getting even larger, as Heritage Distilling Co. of Gig Harbor reveals expansion plans for its original location and a new site in Tumwater.
The company is working construction plans for more than 11,000 sq. ft. of production and retail space in the new Craft Brewing and Distilling Center coming to the traditional beverage center near Tumwater Falls. It expects to open in fall 2018.
“We are thrilled to be … an anchor tenant working with South Puget Sound Community College and others” in what will become a center of excellence for the region and the nation, says Justin Stiefel, CEO of Heritage Distilling. The new location will include a tasting room, retail show, the distillery’s patented “Cask Club” and a unique hands-on program called “My Batch,” along with a full production distillery with capacity for 150,000 proof gallons per year, the current maximum for state-licensed craft operations.
Stiefel is quick to assure fans of the original plant that it, too, will be growing.
“Let me be clear: we are not leaving Gig Harbor. Our waterfront distillery and tasting room will double in size nest spring, as we expand our current space to include the existing McBeckland’s store,” he says. “Simultaneously, we are consolidating all of our management, distribution and logistics under one new, larger roof in Gig Harbor, while also maintaining spirits production there.”
Heritage is adding a new large scale bulk whiskey barrel storage warehouse in approximately 40,000 sq. ft. contained in the new building targeted to open in late 2018.
“If anything, our presence and employment in Gig Harbor will increase, and all aspects of our current retail sales will remain (there) even as we add capacity in Tumwater,” Stiefel adds.
Beyond the South Sound, Heritage Distilling has a full-scale production distillery in Eugene, Oreg., and another will open in Roslyn this November, followed shortly thereafter on Capitol Hill in Seattle.
