Third World health conditions, right here in Pierce County. That is what Dr. Steven Urback and his staff from Puyallup Valley Dental Clinic found when they first visited an elementary school along South Meridian Street in Puyallup 10 years ago.

Too many young children in families that could not afford regular preventive dental care prompted school nurses to make the comparison with global conditions.

Partnering with Medical Teams International, the Puyallup dentist provided six days of free services in October 2003, and has returned each year since while adding two more schools and additional volunteers.

Over the decade since and in partnership with Puyallup Kiwanis, United Way, parent groups and the local dental society foundation, Dr. Urback and other volunteer dental professionals have provided more than $50,000 in value each year.

His personal initiative with Puyallup Valley Dental Van program resulted in him being named 2013 Health Care Champion – Dental. Dr. Urback will be honored at the recognition program June 11 sponsored by Cornerstone Financial Services and produced by Business Examiner Media Group.

An evening event begins at 6 p.m. with a light dinner fare, followed by multi-media program recognizing four other award recipients as well.
