Tacoma's Harmon Brewery and Eatery has been named by Restaurant.com as one of its Top 25 Kid-Friendly Restaurants nationwide.
The Harmon is the only restaurant in Washington state to earn the distinction, joining eateries in tourist destinations such as Pompano Beach, Fla., and Gatlinburg, Tenn., and sprawling metropolitan areas like Chicago, Dallas and Pittsburgh.
Owner Pat Nagle was surprised upon hearing of the honor today — “It's the first I've heard of it,” he laughed — but he wasn't shocked that his restaurant received the honor.
“I think we like to say we're family-friendly, and we always have been since Day One,” Nagle said. “We have large seating areas and we have kids' games that they can bring back to their tables to make it a little more fun and give them something to stay busy. We usually bring out little carrot sticks and ranch for the little guys to chew on. When we first opened in '97, you could still smoke in restaurants, and we were smoke-free from the beginning. It's something that we're proud of. It was always a strategy.
“The moms and the kids are the ones who make the decisions on what to eat, so we figured that would be a good way to go,” Nagle added with a chuckle.
Nagle, who also operates The Hub restaurant in Tacoma, said that the family-friendly atmosphere will extend to the new Hub location opening at Tacoma Narrows Airport on Monday.
“(The family friendly atmosphere) is definitely something that we always want to make sure people know about, especially with having the word 'brewery' in the name,” he said. “Just because we do serve alcohol, it doesn't mean that we can't have a kid-friendly place for families, too.”
