Lake Tapps-Sumner and Olympia are two South Sound communities participating in a “Feed the Need” food drive organized by Haggen, a regional grocery chain.

Customers can make a monetary donation at retail grocery check stands or donate shelf-stable foods in the Haggen stores. Another option is to purchase pre-loaded bags of food for $5, which contain close to $8 worth of products.

“The need for hunger relief in our community is greater than it’s been in the 83 years we’ve been donating to local food banks,” said Kaily Hetherton, marketing event coordinator at Haggen. She noted that one in every seven households regularly uses a local food bank.

All Haggen stores will collect donations through next Tuesday, Oct. 25, with a goal of at least 300,000 pounds of food from the 15 company stores.

Local beneficiaries are Sumner Community Food Bank and Thurston County Food Bank.
