The late morning sailing of Washington State Ferry from Point Defiance in Tacoma to Vashon Island today hosted a ceremony to recognize crew members who saved a life on Christmas Eve.
The ferry captain at the helm of the Chetzemoka on Dec. 24th suffered a medical emergency, and other crew members stepped in to provide first aid, while they waited the arrival of fire department EMTs.
In today’s recognition event, that ailing captain (now recovering) was on hand to award Life Ring awards to those who saved his life. Chief Mate Lee Buris along with Seamen John Lory and Leonard Delong were honored. Additional contributing crewmen will receive recognition in the future.
As the medical emergency was taking place, the ferry boat struck the landing dock, causing an interruption in Vashon ferry service for several days during the Christmas holiday period.
