Statewide, manufacturing’s share of jobs in the economy continues to be on the decline.

According to the Washington Labor Market, a publication of the Labor Market and Economic Analysis Branch of the Washington State Employment Security Department, the manufacturing sector had 20 percent of the job pie in 1979. That proportion dipped to 18 percent by 1989 and went down more to just 14 percent in 1999. That figure is roughly the same as the U.S. average, the report says.

Service jobs rose from 23 to 28 percent of jobs over the last decade.
