The Washington Employment Security Department's unemployment insurance tax office in Tacoma will close on Wednesday, March 21, as part of a plan to shutter 10 district tax offices across Washington due to budget cuts.

“We're in the process, and we've talked about it for a couple of years now, (to) make some budget reductions in this agency,” said ESD Communications Director Sheryl Hutchison.

The closures will generally occur over the next two years as leases expire, Hutchison said. In their place, the department will centralize its account management specialists between two offices and make them available to employers through a toll-free number. Accounts that were previously managed in Tacoma will now be handled in Olympia.

“This action will reduce costs and enhance efficiencies without significantly changing how the department manages unemployment taxes,” explained Hutchison. “Tax auditors will continue to work locally.”

Additional details and updates will be shared in the department’s quarterly newsletter and online at
