The Washington Department of Ecology is seeking public comment on Tacoma's updated shoreline master program.

Tacoma's proposed shoreline program will guide construction and development along nearly 46 miles of shoreline, including 37 miles along Commencement Bay and Puget Sound, the shores of Wapato Lake and portions of the Puyallup River and Hylebos Creek. The program combines local plans for future development and preservation with new development ordinances and related permitting requirements.

Ecology is reviewing Tacoma's shoreline program to ensure that it helps minimize environmental damage to shoreline areas, reserves appropriate areas for water-oriented uses, and protects citizens' rights to public lands and waters.

Ecology will accept public comment on Tacoma's proposed shoreline program through June 7.

Comments and questions should be addressed to Kim Van Zwalenburg, Washington Department of Ecology, P.O. Box 47775, Olympia, WA 98504-7600, Comments also can be submitted by e-mail or fax to (360) 407-6305.
