United Way of Pierce County will ceremonially launch the first Center for Strong Families in the state tomorrow, with a lunch and panel discussion at Goodwill’s Milgard Work Opportunity Center.

The unique new program helps families create more prosperous futures through workforce development, one-on-one career and financial counseling, access to basic services and more. It is patterned on a model developed by Annie E. Casey Foundation.

State Farm, a major employer in downtown Tacoma and at a regional center in DuPont, is supporting this work with a recent grant to Local Initiatives Support Corp. which earmarks $200,000 to Tacoma. Additional funding is coming from City of Tacoma, CHI Franciscan Health, MultiCare Health System, WSECU and Commencement Bank.
