Andy McDonald brought considerable commercial bank lending experience when he joined Tacoma-based Columbia Bank a dozen years ago as chief credit officer and executive vice president.

He had little way of knowing, however, what lay ahead as the Great Recession forced challenges to all financial institutions, including his own. But McDonald is credited by CEO Melanie Dressel as key to Columbia’s strength and subsequent growth as it acquired assets from five failed banks within 18 months.

“Now in multiple states each with their own loan documentation specialists and credit administrators reporting to him, Andy has a talent for picking the right people for the right jobs,” Dressel said in an interview.

McDonald also reflects his employer’s commitment to community involvement, with long board service to Junior Achievement in the South Sound, Boys & Girls Clubs, UWT Advisory Board, EDB for Tacoma-Pierce County and repeat board terms with the largest local chamber of commerce.

Andy McDonald is one of nine finalists for 2016 Financial Executive of the Year, with the awards being presented at a special luncheon on Tuesday, March 22nd, at Pacific Grill Events Center in downtown Tacoma. Ticket information is at this link.

Financial Executives of the Year is a program produced by Business Examiner Media, with sponsorship provided by Heritage Bank and Moss Adams.
