With a one-fourth of all Americans age 3 and older enrolled in classes of one sort or another, according to Census Bureau estimates, it might not be surprising that $8.5 billion has been spent on back-to-school clothing, books, etc., in recent weeks.
Counting students from nursery school through college, the official School Enrollment estimate is 77.1 million, with 48.5 million of those found in Pre-K through 12th grade classrooms.
There were 11 million full- and part-time employees working in public education – roughly 57 percent of all public workers in state and local government jobs. Also from 2015 data, $11,392 was the average of current spending per pupil for elementary and secondary public school systems across the U.S.
