Each Daily Biz Brief leading to August will share two of the remarkable members of the 2015 South Sound 40 Under Forty group, the 13th year of individual recognition for talented young people.

Lizz Lewis grew up in her famed family's restaurants, starting at age 10 by clearing tables and refilling water glasses at the Hob Nob near Wright Park in Tacoma. After high school, she went off on her own career path, but was drawn back to join Farrelli’s Wood Fire Pizza in 2001 and now owns two locations.

What is remarkable about Lizz, however, is how her personal lifestyle impact changes have spread to the whole company. Over the past two years, she found a passion for fitness and health, losing 120 pounds herself, then sharing what she had learned and starting a companywide program of wellness. There are voluntary Sunday workouts, traveling with a nurse to each store location to meet with crew members interested to improve their own health, and adding new under 500 calories menu items.

Expanding good health to a whole employer group, while volunteering with Run to Remember, JBLM Fisher House and AUSA easily place Lizz Lewis among 40 Under Forty honorees in the class of 2015.

Matthew Simon is with Edward Jones in Tacoma, but you’re as likely to find him in a Little League dugout, or with his wife and four kids, as holding the chair's gavel at Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber’s South County branch. Following P.L.U. graduation, he tried banking, then volunteered to be stay-at-home dad to their first son, during which he discovered financial planning.

He joined the national investment advisory firm in 2008 and says he learned a great deal about dealing with stress those early years; remember, the financial meltdown began that same year. Coping skills were invaluable in 2010 when his wife’s ultrasound showed that their new daughter would require a heart transplant shortly after birth. The little girl is now a 5-year-old bouncing off to kindergarten this fall with no rejection or complications.

After hearing him rattle on as a parent through their son’s baseball game, his wife challenged Matthew to stop talking or get involved. That’s how it came to be that you’ll see his name as Soundview Little League board of directors coach coordinator and manager/coach of the 9/10 All Star team. It also shows that Matthew Simon will be right at home along the baseline at Cheney Stadium among 40 Under Forty honorees gather for their recognition.

Both Lizz and Matthew will be on Cheney Stadium's baseball field with 38 other “All Stars” as co-workers, family and friends gather August 4th for the evening celebration of 2015 “40 Under Forty.” Timberland Bank sponsors this Business Examiner recognition program.
