When it comes to charitable giving, Boeing Employees’ Credit Union (BECU) lets its members decide where its charitable dollars should go through its annual People Helping People Awards.

Each year since 2013, BECU has allowed its members to nominate their favorite nonprofits across the state of Washington and, to date, has donated close to $1.5 million through the program. This year, BECU received more than 600 nominations from its members and narrowed the list down to the top 18 organizations.

Of those 18 organizations, finalists were chosen to receive awards ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in the following categories: Member Volunteer of the Year, People’s Choice, Employee’s Choice, Past People Helping People Recipient’s Choice and Community Benefit.

“It is truly inspiring to see how nonprofits are making a positive difference in their local communities,” Tom Berquist, BECU’s senior vice president of marketing and cooperative affairs said in a statement. “As a not-for-profit credit union, supporting the organizations our members care about isn’t just part of who we are, it is in our DNA. We created the People Helping People Awards as a way to honor those who are making a difference.”

BECU was able to grow the People Helping People Awards program by establishing a two-month initiative during which the credit union donated one cent toward the program for every member purchase made with one of its debit Mastercards or Visa credit cards. Through this initiative, BECU raised $515,000.
