Tacoma’s Bates Technical College was listed among the top 25 trade schools in the country, according to Forbes.

The Pierce County school came in No. 19 in the rankings, its first appearance on the second annual awards chart. Forbes said the median mid-career salary for graduates topped $71,000, the highest of any school listed.

The average net price of $3,913, according to Forbes, was among the lowest on the list. The company developed it to highlight the value of technical education compared to a traditional four-year course of study, Forbes said.

Schools made the list based on four criteria. Beyond affordability and post-graduate success, evaluators examined student experiences and program completion success.

“It is a tremendous honor to be included in the Forbes list,” Bates president Lin Zhou said in a statement. “The recognition … amplifies the quality of our programs, our affordability, and the success of our graduates. It confirms that a degree or certificate from Bates Technical College is an excellent value.”

Bates offers roughly 50 degree and certificate programs, covering career education, apprenticeships and general education. Beyond the 3,000 degree and certificate-seeking students, the college serves 5,000 in other programs.
