Gig Harbor’s waterfront will soon be home to a familiar local craft beer company. 7 Seas Brewery recently announced its plans to open a new tap room near the mouth of the harbor, about 300 yards from the brewery’s current downtown location.

According to a statement released by 7 Seas, the new space, which will afford views of the city, the water, and Mt. Rainier, was chosen in part because of the company’s uncertain long-term status in their current downtown Gig Harbor building.

The new tap room will feature a 21 and over area, a family-friendly area, an event space, and a small brewing operation. No food will be served, but customers will be allowed to bring their own or order from nearby restaurants.

With design and architecture inspired by Gig Harbor’s fishing heritage and dock access for boats, kayaks, and SUPs, the building will fit right in with the city’s waterfront character, 7 Seas said. The company expects the tap room to be completed by late 2020.

“The City of Gig Harbor is excited with the vision that 7 Seas is working toward,” said Mayor Kit Kuhn. “7 Seas Brewing and their staff continue to be a great asset to our harbor, and we are sure this project will further their positive contributions to the fabric of our community.”

Founded by locals Travis Guterson and Mike Runion in 2009, 7 Seas offers eight annual beers plus seasonal brews, vintage ales, and a Tap Room Reserve Series.

“Gig Harbor will always be home to 7 Seas Brewing, and we couldn’t be more excited to create a new home, a true representation of 7 Seas brand, on the Gig Harbor waterfront,” said Runion. “With an explosion of growth and big box chains in Gig Harbor these past years, we are thrilled to be a home-grown business, started by Peninsula natives, investing back into our community and creating a unique destination, for many years and beers to come.”

According to the company, 7 Seas is the first Washington brewery to can its craft beer, a decision that has helped push other breweries to adopt environmentally-friendly packaging as well. The company operates two brewery and tap room locations: one in Gig Harbor and one in Tacoma.
